How is Corona Virus affecting the environment

Since the corona virus entered our Country, we have been praying that it will soon be over so that we can all go out again without any restrictions without being in any danger. This is exactly what everyone should be doing … however wishing that everything will be back to the way it was before may not be such a good idea.

The way the environment has Improved since the outbreak of the Covid-19 is something that should not be ignored. By taking a look even in Malta, the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide( NO2), which is a form of emission from cars, trucks busses and others, has dropped drastically especially in rush hours, this being due to the closing of schools and some shops. Both PM2.5 (particles from motor vehicles and airplanes)and PM10 particles were also down by up to 50 percent or more compared to the same day in the previous month.

Up till last year, Malta has topped the list of the Eu with the highest population exposed to pollution according to Eurostat. While cleanliness and purity in Malta varying from low to very low when compared to other countries in Europe. Despite all of this, buildings where continuously being built, all around Malta.

So while we are in a partial lockdown/self-quarantine, it would be a great idea to think exactly what we want to go back to, especially things regarding the environment. The Earth is healing and not just in Malta but all around the world as a consequence of the reduction in mass production. Naturally staying inside once coronavirus is over is not the solution, but reducing our waste, reducing the use of our vehicles/ carpooling, buying local products to reduce importing transportation emission would greatly help

.

The waters in Venice are the cleanest they have been in over half a decade.

In China, the reduction in production has kept 200 megatons of CO2 out of the atmosphere and a 25% reduction in the countries emission.

Lets all take a moment and find ways to make this improvement in the environment last for a long time.We should all pray for the environment to heal just as much as we pray for the Corona virus to be over, after all many people are dying because of pollution EVERYDAY.
