Animals and Coronavirus

“Coronavirus” refers to a family of viruses that range from the common cold to more severe illnesses like SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).

While nothing is yet for sure, it is being assumed the Coronavirus originated from a wet market in Wuhan China. A market selling fresh meat, fish, and other perishable goods as distinguished from “dry markets” which sell durable goods such as fabric and electronics. Exotic and wild animals amongst others including dogs are killed on the spot after being kept in cages stacked on top of the others, by killing these animals on the spot many spreads of illness are being exposed to humans.

Many petitions are being signed to close these markets mostly found in Asia, but even in some European countries. You can sign the petition here and also donate.

To make things even worse for the animals, scientists depend mostly on animals in the lab to test vaccine against Covid 19. These animals include mice, first of all, and then perhaps ferrets or hamsters or monkeys.

However these animals do not develop the same symptoms that humans do, hence, Around the world, different laboratories are racing to breed stocks of mice genetically engineered for research and testing the susceptibility of other animals to infection with the virus that causes Covid-19!

Animal Testing

Despite that In 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) stated that “research involving chimpanzees has rarely accelerated new discoveries or the advancement of human health for infectious diseases.” and according to NIH:95% of new drugs that test safe and effective in animals fail in human trials, many universities are still breading different animals so that they test vaccines on them.

On a good note, up till now, there hasn’t been any reports that pets can that got Covid 19 from their owners, neither that they can transmit Covid 19. Having said that it is quite obvious that you do not have to disown your pets, something which has been done in Asian countries. Many more studies are needed to discover exactly how Covid 19 can affect our pets. Up till now, we can enjoy the company of our pets while staying inside, our pets would love this whole quarantine thing !!
